Geography¶
The Volnian Empire is the largest continental nation of Sierra by territory. Its mainland extends from the cold northern coasts of the Volnian Sea south through the agricultural heartland of the Volkha basin, across the great spine of the Verkhal range and into the eastern coal frontier, and onward to the tropical southern coasts of the Sur'Bari basin. Additional Volnian holdings include tropical island territories in the southern oceans.
Geographic regions¶
The Volkha Basin¶
The empire's demographic, agricultural, and political core. The Volkha — the great mother river of Volnia — rises in the central highlands and flows south through the most fertile land on the continent before reaching the inland sea that closes its course. Around the Volkha sit the empire's largest cities, the capital Chernagorsk, and the fertile plains that feed the empire.

The Verkhal Spine¶
A massive north-to-south mountain range that bisects the empire, separating the western heartland from the vast eastern frontier. Ancient and weathered — not the dramatic peaks of the Arcadian Mountains, but a long, endless succession of forested ridges rich in coal, iron, and rare-earth ore. The Verkhal is the empire's industrial heartland; it is also the political fault line that produced the current civil war.

The Eastern Coal Provinces¶
Beyond the Verkhal Spine lies the empire's frontier — a sparsely-populated, resource-rich region whose economy is dominated by deep coal extraction. The coal miners of the east are a politically distinct social class with their own traditions, their own grievances, and a long-standing demand for greater representation. The Separatist Republican Army (SRA) draws its core support from these provinces.
The Altyn-Sayan Highlands¶
A remote alpine wilderness in the southern interior where the steppe rises into mountain country. Home to the indigenous Altyn-Sayan peoples, traditional pastoralists who retain significant cultural autonomy. Sparsely populated, sacred in Volnic Orthodox tradition (several major monasteries are sited here), and militarily significant as the empire's defensive depth against southern approaches.
The Southern Coast¶
Volnia's tropical south fronts the Sur'Bari Sea. The southern coast holds:
- The empire's warm-water ports
- Major naval bases for the Sur'Bari Squadron
- Plantation agriculture and exotic-commodity exports
- Cultural and economic ties to Caldoria across the Sur'Bari basin
The Southern Island Territories¶
Tropical islands held in the southern oceans — colonial-era acquisitions that remain Volnian territory. Strategically positioned along major shipping lanes; economically dependent on imperial subsidy; politically restive in places.

Borders¶
Volnia shares only one land border — with the Federated States of Arcadia to its north. Every other neighbor is reached across water. This geographic isolation has shaped the empire's strategic thinking for centuries: Volnia is a continental power that has nevertheless had to invest disproportionately in naval and amphibious capability, because almost every threat to its borders has to cross sea space to reach the empire.
