Princely Chartanian Navy¶
The Princely Chartanian Navy (PCN) is the coastal-defence and maritime-cooperation arm of the CPDF. The PCN is a small, modernisation-focused force, oriented principally on the protection of the three Chartanian sea frontiers and on cooperation with the Maritime Trade Federation (MTF).
Mission¶
The PCN's mission, in priority order:
- Defend Chartanian coastal waters and the approaches to Chartenmoor
- Maintain the Maritime Trade Federation patrol contribution in the Aegiran Sea, Aegiran Strait, and Volnian Sea
- Protect Chartanian-flagged shipping in regional waters
- Provide harbour security for Chartenmoor, the Corvel-Mouth ports, and Westmark
- Support international-quarter port-security operations in cooperation with the International Quarter Protection Force
Strength¶
| Component | Strength |
|---|---|
| Active personnel | ~14,000 |
| Reserve personnel | ~12,000 |
| Major surface combatants (light frigates / corvettes) | ~7 |
| Patrol craft and small combatants | ~40 |
The PCN is one of the smallest national navies in Sierra by tonnage but punches well above its weight in operational effectiveness. The MTF cooperation framework gives the PCN access to broader force structure for major contingencies; in routine operations the PCN handles its own territorial waters with its own assets. The PCN does not operate submarines, destroyers, aviation-capable surface combatants, or amphibious lift.
Organisation¶
The PCN is organised into three operational forces and a training establishment. Senior officer title: Chief of the Princely Chartanian Navy. Principal naval bases: Corvel-Mouth Naval Base (HQ; Chartanian Naval College), Chartenmoor Naval Base, Westmark Naval Anchorage.
Northern Force¶
Aegiran Sea operations; the PCN's principal patrol element. Headquartered at Chartenmoor Naval Base, on the lower Corvel near the river-mouth.
- 1st Patrol Squadron — the senior patrol-vessel formation
- Chartenmoor Harbour Defence Squadron — defensive small craft and minehunters for the capital approaches
- Northern Aviation Detachment — CN-235 MPA and SAR helicopters operating from Chartenmoor
Strait Force¶
Aegiran Strait operations; based at the Westmark Naval Anchorage on the western coast.
- 2nd Patrol Squadron — Strait Force patrol vessels
- Westmark Defence Detachment — coastal-defence assets coordinating with PCA Coastal Defence Battalions
Southern Force¶
Volnian Sea operations; based at Corvel-Mouth Naval Station, on the lower Corvel mouth.
- 3rd Patrol Squadron — Southern Force patrol vessels
- Corvel-Mouth River and Coastal Detachment — riverine craft and the Corvel-Mouth coastal patrol vessels
- Southern Aviation Detachment — small maritime aviation element
Training Establishment¶
- Chartanian Naval College at Corvel-Mouth — officer training (also accepts international cadets from MTF and SNAM partners)
- PCN Petty Officer Academy at Chartenmoor — senior enlisted training
- PCN Conscript Sea School at Westmark — initial training for naval conscripts
Surface fleet¶
The PCN's surface fleet is small and modernisation-focused:
| Class | Type | Number | Source | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Princess-class | Light frigate | 3 | Aegiran-built | PCN's principal surface combatant; modern electronics; ~3,200 t displacement |
| Restoration-class | Patrol corvette | 4 | Volnian-design, locally modernised | Late-Continental-Wars design refurbished at Corvel-Mouth |
| Mourne-class | Coastal patrol vessel | ~10 | Locally built (Corvel-Mouth) | Modern small combatant |
| Charta-class | Inshore patrol vessel | ~14 | Locally built (Corvel-Mouth) | Standard inshore patrol craft |
| Volnian Sea-class | Minehunter | 4 | Aegiran-built | PCN mine countermeasures capability |
| Royal-class | Training / auxiliary | 2 | Locally built | Naval College training vessels |
Submarines¶
The PCN does not operate submarines. Submarine warfare in Chartanian waters is handled by MTF cooperation, principally with the Aegiran Navy. Per Sierran Conflict canon, no nation on Europa operates nuclear-powered submarines; for Chartania the question does not arise.
Naval aviation¶
The PCN's aviation arm is small:
- Maritime patrol aircraft — CN-235 MPA fleet operating from Chartenmoor
- Anti-submarine warfare helicopters — small fleet, operating from the Princess-class frigates and from shore bases
- Search-and-rescue helicopters — the principal Chartanian SAR capability; operates from all three naval bases
Marines and coastal defence¶
The PCN does not field marine infantry as a distinct service. Coastal-protection roles are handled by Army Coastal Defence Battalions in the II Capital Defence Corps area, working under joint PCN-PCA arrangements. Coastal anti-ship missile batteries are a procurement priority but currently a limited capability.
Operations¶
MTF cooperation¶
The PCN is one of the three founding members of the Maritime Trade Federation and the principal Chartanian contribution to MTF security. Standard cooperation includes:
- Joint anti-piracy patrols in the Aegiran Sea
- Standardised port-security procedures across MTF ports
- Mutual logistical and basing access
- Coordinated MTF responses to maritime incidents
The Continuation War has brought MTF cooperation to a higher operational tempo than at any time since the closing years of the Continental Wars. PCN units have been continuously deployed on MTF convoy operations since the outbreak of war in July 2026.
International quarter port security¶
The PCN contributes patrol craft, divers, and harbour-defence personnel to the protection of Chartenmoor's harbour district — particularly the wharves serving the international quarter. This contribution is coordinated through the International Quarter Protection Force and is a substantial year-round commitment.
IPF maritime contributions¶
The PCN occasionally contributes a patrol corvette or coastal patrol vessel to IPF maritime peacekeeping operations under International Court mandate. These deployments are typically of six-month duration and are politically protected by the Court mandate.
Doctrine¶
PCN doctrine is coastal patrol, anti-piracy, and territorial-waters defence. Key features:
- Networked surveillance of the three coastal frontiers, integrating PCN sensors with PCN aviation, PCA coastal-defence assets, and MTF partner sensors
- Light frigate-led patrol squadrons in each force area, with the Princess-class frigates as the principal high-readiness assets
- Inshore swarm defence of harbour approaches, using the Charta-class and Mourne-class small combatants
- Riverine operations along the lower Corvel
- Joint operations with the PCA coastal-defence forces at the brigade level
Equipment¶
See the Equipment page for the full inventory and the structured data/equipment/chartania.json for the catalog. The PCN equipment focus is on:
- Modern light frigates (Princess-class, Aegiran-sourced)
- Modern small combatants (locally built at Corvel-Mouth)
- Mature mine-countermeasures capability
- Adequate maritime aviation (CN-235 MPA + SAR helicopters)
- The Continuation War has accelerated procurement of additional patrol corvettes and anti-ship missile systems
Rank structure¶
The PCN uses a standard naval rank structure parallel to the PCA's land-army structure, with Chartanian titles and traditional naval rank distinctions. Officer commissioning runs through the Chartanian Naval College; enlisted personnel are conscripts (with substantial volunteer extensions) trained through the PCN Conscript Sea School.
