Equipment¶
This page summarizes the principal equipment of the Aegiran Federal Defense Forces (AFDF) at the bible-narrative level. The structured equipment catalog — with quantities, manufacturers, calibers, and modernization status — is at data/equipment/aegira.json.
The AFDF is in an active modernization tranche: older Leipzisch-export equipment (Leopard 1A1, Marder 1A3, PzH 2000, Fuchs, MAN logistics) is phasing out and modern Eurekan-export equipment (Challenger MBT, Piranha-class wheeled APC) is phasing in. The transition is partway through and will not stabilize until the late 2020s.
Small arms¶
The AFDF service rifle is the FN F2000 — a 5.56×45mm bullpup adopted in the late 2010s small-arms modernization tranche. It is produced under licence by the Federal Munitions Authority at Krygos and fielded across the Marines and the Army. A compact carbine variant is issued to vehicle crews, paratroopers, and air-defense gunners.
The F2000 is sold with an integral 1.6× optic, retained as standard issue across the AFDF rifle squad. The choice is uncommon among Sierran peer militaries and is one of the signature visual markers of the AFDF alongside the Greek-style ceremonial uniforms and the EICL flag flown on Marine formations.
Supporting small arms:

- GPMG: FN MAG (7.62×51mm) — battalion-level GPMG, vehicle-mounted and dismounted

Infantry support weapons¶
- Grenade launchers: FN40 GL (underbarrel and standalone); Mk19 (vehicle-mounted automatic, Arcadian export)
- Disposable AT: AT4-CS (Bofors-Gorlish export, WDP-standard)
- Reusable AT: Carl Gustaf M4 (Bofors-Gorlish export, WDP-standard)
- Man-portable ATGM: NLAW

Soldier kit and protection¶
- Body armor — plates: Level IV (active Marines and Army); Level III (reserve and garrison)

- Night vision: Gen 3 (active Marines), Gen 2+ (Army), Gen 2 (reserves)

Land armor and vehicles¶
Aegiran land armor is in transitional mixed-fleet status through the late 2020s:
Main battle tanks¶
- Leopard 1A1 (Leipzisch export, late Continental Wars era) — ~80 hulls in Army armored battalions, phasing out. Retained in garrison and reserve armor formations through the transition.
- Challenger 2/3 (Eurekan export, modern) — ~40 delivered to date, full-tranche acquisition target ~80 by 2030. Priority recipients in order: Marine Armored Battalion (I MEB), then the Federal Expeditionary Armored Squadron, then frontline Army armored battalions.
IFVs and APCs¶
- Marder 1A3 (Leipzisch export, tracked IFV, ~150 hulls) — principal AFDF IFV; no modern replacement programmed yet
- Boxer (wheeled IFV) — in Army wheeled formations and Expeditionary Brigade support
- Fuchs (wheeled APC and reconnaissance, Leipzisch export) — transitioning to Piranha-class
- Piranha-class (Leipzisch/Eurekan export, modern wheeled APC) — incoming tranche
- M113 (Arcadian export, tracked APC) — legacy supporting role
Tactical and logistics vehicles¶
- G-Wagen (Leipzisch export) — standard active-force LTV across the AFDF

Amphibious assault vehicles¶
- AAV-pattern tracked amphibious assault vehicles (late-Continental-Wars Leipzisch/Eurekan export) — across three Marine AAV Battalions; modernization tranche under planning; the existing fleet will carry the eastern-islands recapture campaign.
Artillery¶
- Self-propelled tracked: PzH 2000 (155mm, Leipzisch export) — modern; in the Federal Expeditionary Artillery Bn and the Marine Artillery Battalions / Marine Artillery Group
- Towed medium: M777 (155mm, Arcadian export)
- Towed light: M101A1 (105mm) — retained in reserve and garrison artillery
- Heavy MLRS: M270 (Arcadian export) — corps-level rocket artillery
- Tactical ballistic missile: ATACMS (Arcadian export, M270-launched) — precision strike; conventional warheads only
Air defense (ground-based)¶
The AFDF air defense network is fully integrated with WDP IAMD through the Krygos Air Operations Centre:

The republic does not maintain an indigenous medium- or long-range SAM development capability and is import-dependent on WDP partners for this category.
Naval vessels¶
Built principally by Krygos Naval Shipyards (the principal yard) and Heliopolis Industrial Combine and Pharosian Marine Engineering (secondary). The Stolos operates:
- Surface combatants: 4-6 destroyers, 8-10 frigates, corvettes, OPVs, fast-attack craft (class designations TBD)
- Submarines: ~6 conventional AIP-equipped attack submarines (SSK) — likely Gotland-class (Gorlund export) or Type 214 equivalent (Leipzisch export). No SSNs, no SSBNs (Outer Space Demilitarization Protocols-compliant; nuclear is power-generation only)
- Amphibious shipping: 1-2 LHD, 2-3 LPD, substantial LST fleet, LCAC/LCU landing craft
- Mine countermeasures: substantial MCM fleet given the archipelago's narrow approaches
- Auxiliaries: fleet oilers, replenishment ships, hospital ships
The Stolos is carrier-less by design — coalition fleet aviation is provided by FSA carriers in WDP framework operations.

Aircraft¶
The Air Wing and Naval Air Arm operate WDP-pattern aircraft principally procured through coalition channels:

The republic does not maintain an indigenous combat-aircraft development capability and is import-dependent on WDP / Eurekan export for this category.
Coastal defense systems¶
The republic operates a substantial coastal defense complex integrating:
- Truck-mounted coastal anti-ship missile batteries — selection TBD (likely RBS-15 KA Bofors-Gorlish or NSM equivalent)
- Coastal artillery — heavy gun and missile artillery on each federal island
- Naval mine warfare — substantial defensive mine inventory and dedicated minelaying capability
- Harbor defense — fixed harbor surveillance, anti-swimmer measures, port security
- Coastal Surveillance Network — radar and electro-optical surveillance
This is one of the most developed coastal defense systems in central Sierra, reflecting the strategic priority of defending the dispersed island archipelago. The 2026 fall of the eastern islands has triggered substantial additional investment for the remaining federal islands.

The Aegiran defense industrial base is substantial relative to the republic's population, reflecting the strategic priority of naval and amphibious capability. The republic exports aluminum plating and structural metals to WDP partners, secondary naval construction to smaller MTF partners, and small-arms ammunition regionally.
Import dependencies¶
Major equipment categories that Aegira cannot produce domestically and must import:
- Main battle tanks — Leopard 1A1 (Leipzisch export, legacy) and Challenger (Eurekan export, incoming modernization)
- Modern combat aircraft — full reliance on WDP / Eurekan export (F-16 Block 70/72, Tornado GR4)
- Modern medium- and long-range SAM systems — Patriot (Arcadian), TOR M-1 (Volnian)
- Modern attack helicopters — pending selection

Equipment philosophy¶
Aegiran equipment design philosophy is quality-focused with WDP standardization. The republic does not pursue indigenous design across the full spectrum — that would be economically infeasible for a small-population state — but instead emphasizes:
- Naval excellence — substantial domestic naval shipbuilding capability with internationally competitive output
- Amphibious specialization — substantial domestic amphibious shipping and assault vehicle capability
- WDP standardization for land force equipment, aircraft, and most other categories
- Coastal defense indigeneity — substantial domestic coastal artillery integration
This philosophy aligns the republic's industrial investment with its strategic priorities: invest indigenously in naval and amphibious capability, rely on WDP standardization for less central categories.
