Volnian Imperial Armed Forces¶

The Volnian Imperial Armed Forces (VIAF) are the unified military of the Volnian Empire — three services under a single supreme command (the Stavka), with the Emperor as ceremonial Commander-in-Chief.

The VIAF's structure is Western combined-arms in organization — brigade-based, professional NCO corps, joint-command interoperability — but its regimental traditions, unit names, and ceremonial culture are drawn from the Tsarist imperial heritage: Imperial Guards, Cossack Hosts, Hussars, Lancers, Dragoons, Grenadiers, and the parade-ground rituals that go with them.

Supreme command¶

The VIAF is commanded by the Stavka (Supreme High Command), through the following structure:

Imperator — Commander-in-Chief (sovereign, ceremonial)
Stavka Chairman — chief executive of the armed forces (junta head)
Chief of the Imperial General Staff (Genshtab) — operational chief; reports to the Chairman
Minister of War — civilian-administrative interface, always a serving general
Service Commanders — Army, Navy, Air Service

The Stavka also holds direct authority over:

The Imperial Guard (administratively separate from the regular Army)
The Cossack Hosts (semi-autonomous regional formations)
The Imperial Security Service (the empire's principal intelligence and internal-security organ)

Imperial Guard¶

The Imperial Guard (Imperatorskaya Gvardiya) is the senior corps of the empire — the elite household formations descended from the original regiments of the 1732 imperial settlement. Guards regiments have distinct uniforms, distinct ceremonial roles, and are stationed primarily in the Volkha basin around Chernagorsk.

Modern Guards regiments serve as the empire's mechanized shock force as well as ceremonial units. In wartime they form the heavy core of the empire's elite divisions.

Senior Guards regiments include:

The Preobrazhensky Life Guards Regiment — senior of all Volnian regiments by precedence; the Emperor's personal foot guard
The Semenovsky Life Guards Regiment — second-senior; mechanized infantry in modern service
The Pavlovsky Grenadier Regiment — heavy assault infantry; distinguished mitre-style ceremonial headdress
The Izmailovsky Life Guards — third-senior; air-assault role in modern service
The Imperial Hussars — light cavalry; modern reconnaissance role
The Imperial Lancers (Ulany) — armored cavalry; modern main-battle-tank role
The Imperial Cossack Convoy — the Emperor's personal escort

Cossack Hosts¶

The Cossack Hosts (Voiska) are semi-autonomous regional military formations, each drawn from a specific Volnian region and traditionally responsible for frontier defense in their host territory. In the modern era they function as:

Elite light-infantry / airborne / special-operations formations — the Cossack tradition supplies many of the empire's most capable troops
Frontier and counter-insurgency forces — particularly the eastern Hosts engaged against the SRA
Cavalry units (now mounted reconnaissance and air-cavalry) — preserving the historical mounted-warfare role in modern form

Named Hosts of the modern empire:

Volkha Host — the heartland Host; senior by precedence
Verkhal Host — the Spine and eastern frontier; currently engaged against the SRA
Altyn Host — the southern highlands; mountain-specialized
Sur'Bari Host — the southern coast and islands; tropical and maritime specialization
Vorbarrian Host — the northern frontier; cold-weather specialized

Service Special Operations¶

The empire's special operations community is built around three principal commands:

Army: Cossack Special Forces (Spetsnaz Voiska) — drawn from the senior Cossack Hosts; the empire's premier ground SOF
Navy: Imperial Naval Special Warfare (Razvedchiki) — combat divers, naval-infantry raiders
Stavka-level: The Tsar's Hand (Ruka Tsarya) — the empire's tier-1 black special-purpose force, reporting directly to the Stavka Chairman. Composition, strength, and basing are classified

Conscription and reserve structure¶

Universal male conscription at 18, two years' service
Reserve obligation through age 50
Expanded female volunteer service since the 1990s in combat-support, technical, and (since 2010) selected combat roles
Reserve formations are organized as second-line divisions held in mobilization status; activation typically requires Stavka declaration
