The Kingdom of Choktovakia is the great northeastern power of Sierra and one of the two superpowers to emerge from the Continental Wars. A continental-scale constitutional monarchy under the House of Krov — continuous since 1523 — modern Choktovakia spans the western Great Sierran Steppe, the central agricultural plain, the deep Choktovakian Forest of the northeast, and the cold northern coast on the Choktovan Sea. Its capital, Krovar, sits in the central plain at the historic dynastic seat.
Choktovakia's political character is dominated by the unusual combination of an old absolutist tradition with a thoroughly modern constitutional settlement. The monarchy — once a Tsarist-style autocracy in all but name — was successively constrained by the Charter of 1894 and the Charter Amendments of 1973, producing the present arrangement: a popular, widely-trusted Crown that retains substantial reserve powers, a bicameral legislature (the Sobor), an independent judiciary, and a professional standing military commanded by the King through the General Staff. Royal approval ratings have remained above 80 percent for two generations, and the Crown is consistently the most trusted institution in national public life.
Strategically, Choktovakia is the founding state and recognized leader of the Sierra Non-Aligned Movement (SNAM), the third great bloc of the post-1972 order alongside the Arcadian-led WDP and the Rakutanian-CSAT ESA. The Choktovakian non-aligned posture is not pacifism — the Kingdom maintains a 480,000-strong active military with a million-strong reserve — but principled refusal of the bipolar competition. Choktovakia trades with all blocs, exercises with all neutrals, and intervenes in none.
The shape of modern Choktovakia¶
Three facts shape the Kingdom's modern self-understanding:
The Messoman wound. The Messoman invasions of 1890 overran the western steppe and drove the royal army into a generational fighting retreat through the forest belt. The Battle of Konigsgrad (1926–1927) — in which Choktovakian forces ground down the Messoman armies in the eastern industrial city — is the founding event of the modern nation. It is also the source of the country's distinctive cultural atheism: the popular saying renders it, "We saw God absent at Konigsgrad. We made our own salvation."
The post-war ascent. The Treaty of Chartania (1972) found Choktovakia transformed. The Crown had led the resistance in exile; the army had matched Messoman armored and orbital capability through the late period of the war; the country emerged from forty years of conflict as one of the two recognized continental superpowers. The half-century since has been a continental cold war between Krovar and Tarsus — quietly competitive, cordial in form, fought through proxies, exercises, and prestige diplomacy rather than direct confrontation.
The Black Mountain bruise. The lone disfigurement of the modern Choktovakian record is the loss of the Black Mountain Region — the southwestern marsh-and-steppe province lost to an anti-monarchist rebellion in the years after the Continental Wars. Most Choktovakians believe the post-1972 drawdown left the army too thin to suppress the rising. CSAT brokered the ceasefire that established the Black Mountain Protectorate as an entity outside Choktovakian sovereignty — a settlement most Choktovakians interpret as a CSAT strategic insertion as much as a peace. The protectorate's PMC-army, the Black Mountain Brigade, is the principal reason the Crown has declined repeated public petitions to reinforce the western frontier since the opening of the Continuation War.
Strategic posture in the present war¶
Choktovakia is formally neutral in both the Continuation War (2026– ) and the Volnian Civil War (2025– ). The Royal Armed Forces are in a heightened defensive posture along the western frontier; the navy patrols the Hinomuran Sea in greater strength than peacetime; the air force maintains continuous CAP over the central plain. None of this has been declared a mobilization, and none of it has crossed any neighbor's frontier.
The internal politics of the war are more interesting than the external. Civic petitions, monarchist associations, and veterans' leagues have repeatedly asked the Crown to do more — reinforce the west, deter CSAT, intimidate the Black Mountain Brigade. The Crown has declined. The Black Mountain Brigade is not a threat the Kingdom wants to test, and a wider war is not one the Kingdom is yet willing to fight.
