Livonian Army¶

The Livonian Army is the senior service of the LDF and the principal land-warfare arm of the Republic of Livonia. The Army is a modern motorized-mobile force built around the Choktovakian-export Pandur II 8x8 wheeled APC, with a small armoured shock element built around the Leipzisch-export Leopard 2A7 main battle tank. It is organised principally for the rapid-response defence of the Northern Highlands frontier against CSAT incursion, mobile defence in depth across the Valdrian Plain, and concentrated counter-attack against any breakthrough.

Mission¶

The Army's mission, in priority order:

Defend the Northern Highlands frontier against CSAT incursion through motorized rapid-response and mobile defence in depth
Concentrate the armored shock element for decisive counter-attack against any successful CSAT breakthrough
Defend the Valdrian Plain as the country's demographic and economic core
Protect the Sarmen rare-earth industrial complex and the southern coast logistics
Channel and delay any northern advance into terrain where the LTDF can impose decisive cost
Provide the LDF International Detachment for IPF deployments
Support civil authorities in major emergencies (Halenveld wildfires, coastal storm response, large-scale civil disorder)

Doctrine¶

Army doctrine is motorized rapid response, mobile defence in depth, and concentrated armored counter-attack. The LDF is built to move fast on wheels, fight from prepared positions in the Northern Highlands corridors, fall back if necessary, and counter-attack in mobile concentration with the armored brigade as the decisive shock arm.

Key doctrinal features:

Motorized-first manoeuvre arm — six motorized brigades equipped on the Pandur II 8x8 wheeled APC, organised under two divisional commands, are the operational backbone of the Army. The doctrine emphasises operational mobility along the Northern Highlands corridors and the strategic mobility to redeploy fast between sectors of the CSAT frontier.
Single armoured shock brigade — the III Armored Brigade "Highland Shock" (Leopard 2A7 + CV-90 mechanized infantry + PzH 2000 SP artillery) is the doctrinal counter-attack force; held in reserve until a CSAT breakthrough is identified and then committed to decisive concentration.
Engagement-range overmatch — the late-2010s adoption of the 7.62x51mm FN SCAR-H as the squad rifle was a deliberate doctrinal choice to outrange CSAT motorized infantry in the Highlands corridors and broken country.
Integration with the LTDF at the local level — regular Army formations train to operate alongside dispersed LTDF irregular forces and to coordinate with the LTDF's territorial framework as fallback layers behind the active manoeuvre force.
Joint operations with Chartania through the standing Defence Understanding — sensor sharing, planning interoperability, and standardisation on radios, IFF, and selected ammunition.
Defensive war only — the Army does not train for offensive operations against CSAT territory. The federal-republican commitment to defensive war is part of the doctrine.

The motorized-mobile doctrine is a deliberate departure from the older static Total Defence model. The LTDF remains the strategic deterrent; the active Army is now built to deny CSAT a cheap operational result and to make any incursion costly enough at the operational level that planners decline it before the LTDF deterrent has to be activated.

Organisation¶

The Army is organised into two operational commands plus an Army Aviation Regiment, an International Detachment, and a Training and Doctrine establishment.

Northern Command¶

The Army's principal warfighting formation, oriented on the CSAT frontier. Headquartered in the Northern Highlands forward garrison at Korven. Northern Command holds the bulk of LDF combat power and the focus of post-2018 modernization funding.

I Motorized Division "Halenveld" — three motorized brigades (1st, 2nd, 3rd Motorized Brigade "Halenveld") on Pandur II 8x8, plus division artillery (M777 + attached PzH 2000), division air defence (IRIS-T SLM + Pantsir-class SHORAD), divisional combat engineers (Pandur II combat-engineer variants), and division CSS. Forward-deployed along the eastern Highlands corridors.
II Motorized Division "Valdrian" — three motorized brigades on Pandur II 8x8 with the same divisional support structure as I Div, deployed across the central Valdrian Plain as the mobile reserve and counter-concentration force.
III Armored Brigade "Highland Shock" — the LDF's single armoured brigade and doctrinal counter-attack force. Two armored battalions (Leopard 2A7, ~60 tanks each), one mechanized infantry battalion (CV-90), one armored recon squadron (Pandur II RECCE), one SP artillery battalion (PzH 2000), combat engineer battalion (Buffel/Kodiak), and brigade CSS. Held in operational reserve behind Northern Command.
Federal Border Service Battalions (Ministry of Interior, LDF-operational) — frontier surveillance and Northern Command liaison; light-infantry equipped; substantial LTDF cadre overlap.

Southern Command¶

Capital defence, coastal defence, and southern-province territorial garrison. Headquartered at Valdris.

IV Motorized Brigade "Valdris" — capital-defence brigade on Pandur II; three motorized infantry battalions plus supporting battalions; reserve-mobilization framework hub.
Coastal Defence Battalion Group — coastal artillery (RBS-15 Mk3 batteries), coastal infantry security at Volnian Sea ports, harbour defence.
V Provincial Brigade (cadre) — territorial garrison and LTDF activation hub for the southern provinces.

Army Aviation Regiment¶

Headquartered at Valdris under direct Army command.

Attack Helicopter Squadron — Tiger HAP (~14 airframes); armed reconnaissance and CAS in support of motorized brigades.
Medium Lift Squadron — NH90 TTH; troop lift, casualty evacuation, Halenveld support.
Reconnaissance and Liaison Squadron — light-helo recon and command liaison.

LDF International Detachment¶

A battalion expeditionary formation drawn from across the active Army on rotating tour, constituting Livonia's standing contribution to IPF deployments. Equipped to higher modernisation standards than the line Army; deploys under International Court mandate. The only Livonian troops routinely abroad.

Special operations forces¶

The Livonian Special Operations Command is a small joint command reporting directly to the Chief of the General Staff. The LDF's small size means SOF is concentrated rather than service-distributed:

Livonian Special Forces Group (LSFG) — ~600 personnel; tier-1 SOF; direct action, deep reconnaissance, unconventional warfare; selection drawn from across the LDF. Two operational squadrons plus operations support and training squadrons.
Halenveld Long-Range Recon Detachment — light-infantry recon specialists drawn from Halenveld Livonian communities; long-range patrol in the boreal-forest environment.
Naval Frogman Detachment — under Navy operationally; combat divers, ship-boarding, port-security, MTF anti-piracy contribution.

There is no formed airborne or air-assault brigade in the LDF. SOF parachute capability is the only paradrop asset.

Equipment¶

The Army's equipment is a modern mix funded principally by rare-earth export revenues across the 2010s-20s modernization tranches. See the Equipment page for the full inventory; the principal items:

Training¶

The Army training year is built around five phases:

Conscript service is one year from enlistment. Following the active year, conscripts are enrolled in both the Army regular reserve and the LTDF reserve.
