Livonian Army¶

The Livonian Army is the senior service of the LDF and the principal land-warfare arm of the Republic of Livonia. The Army is a motorised light-infantry force with a small armoured component, organised principally for the defence of the Northern Highlands frontier against CSAT and the rapid manoeuvre of mechanized forces in the Valdrian Plain.

Mission¶

The Army's mission, in priority order:

Defend the Northern Highlands frontier against CSAT incursion
Channel and delay any northern advance into terrain where the LTDF can impose decisive cost
Defend the Valdrian Plain as the country's demographic and economic core
Protect the Sarmen rare-earth industrial complex and the southern coast logistics
Provide the LDF International Detachment for IPF deployments
Support civil authorities in major emergencies (Halenveld wildfires, coastal storm response, large-scale civil disorder)

Organisation¶

The Army is organised into four operational commands and a training establishment:

Northern Command¶

The Army's principal warfighting formation, oriented on the CSAT frontier. Headquartered at Korven, in the Northern Highlands. Northern Command is the largest single Livonian formation and the focus of the bulk of modern modernisation funding.

1st Mechanized Brigade ("Northern Shield") — the Army's senior mechanized formation; modernised IFVs and a small MBT component
2nd Motorised Brigade ("Korven") — motorised light infantry; principal frontier-defence formation
3rd Motorised Brigade ("Northern Hills") — motorised light infantry; second-line frontier defence and depth
4th Light Brigade ("The Highlanders") — light forces optimised for the Northern Highlands; mountain-warfare specialists
Northern Command Artillery Group — towed and self-propelled artillery; rocket artillery in selected concentrations
Northern Command Engineer, Signals, and Logistics Regiments

Central Command¶

Valdrian Plain manoeuvre and capital defence. Headquartered at Valdris.

5th Mechanized Brigade ("Valdris") — the central reserve mechanized formation; rapid-reaction asset
6th Motorised Brigade ("The Federal") — motorised light infantry; Valdris-area garrison and reserve
Presidential Guard Regiment — the working ceremonial and active-duty guard regiment of the President's residence and the Federal Assembly; a substantial mechanized battalion
Central Command artillery, signals, engineer, and logistics regiments

Western Command¶

Western frontier (Chartania) and Western Marches defence. Smaller than Northern or Central Commands and oriented as much toward joint Chartanian-Livonian operations as toward independent action.

7th Motorised Brigade ("The Western Marches") — motorised light infantry; the principal Western Command formation

Halenveld Command¶

Halenveld provincial defence and the LTDF integration role. The smallest of the four commands by regular-army strength but exceptionally important strategically.

8th Light Infantry Brigade ("The Forest") — light infantry trained and equipped for Halenveld operations; the regular-army formation most tightly integrated with the LTDF reserve framework
Halenveld Special Operations Regiment — small force optimised for irregular warfare in dense forest; the army's principal contribution to the Total Defence framework

Training and Doctrine Command¶

Livonian Defence Academy at Valdris — officer commissioning (combined-service institution; covered under Armed Forces)

Northern Highlands Mountain Warfare School at Korven — specialist training for highland operations
Halenveld Irregular Warfare Centre at Halenstadt — the principal LDF doctrinal centre for Total Defence and irregular operations; one of the most respected institutions of its kind in Sierra

LDF International Detachment¶

A battalion-equivalent expeditionary formation drawn from across the active Army on rotating tour, constituting Livonia's standing contribution to IPF deployments. Equipped to higher modernisation standards than the line Army; deploys under International Court mandate.

Doctrine¶

Army doctrine is frontier defence in depth, combined with rapid mechanized counter-action. Key features:

Defence in depth along the Northern Highlands, exploiting the channelled terrain to constrain CSAT approach axes
Rapid mechanized counter-action by 1st and 5th Mechanized Brigades against any successful CSAT breakthrough
Integration with the LTDF at the local level — regular Army formations are trained to operate alongside dispersed LTDF irregular forces and to coordinate with the LTDF's territorial framework
Joint operations with Chartania through the standing Defence Understanding
Halenveld forest defence as a specialised mission with its own doctrinal centre, optimised for dense boreal forest operations
The deterrent-of-cost framework — Army planning explicitly assumes that the principal strategic effect of the Army is to make any CSAT incursion sufficiently costly that CSAT planners decline the operation

The Army does not train for offensive operations against CSAT territory. The federal-republican commitment to defensive war is part of the doctrine.

Equipment¶

The Army's equipment is a mix of late-Continental-Wars-era systems and modern modernisation tranches. See the Equipment page for the full inventory; the principal items:

Service rifle — modern Livonian-manufactured 5.56mm rifle; one of the products of the country's small-arms industrial capacity
Main battle tank — modernised Volnian-pattern MBT; small total fleet, concentrated in Northern Command's 1st Mechanized Brigade
IFV / APC — mixed fleet; modernisation programme ongoing
Artillery — towed and self-propelled 155mm; rocket artillery in selected concentrations
Anti-tank systems — ATGM, MAAWS, RPG variants; substantial inventory reflecting the country's CSAT-frontier defensive posture
Mortars — 60mm, 81mm, 120mm
MANPADS — substantial inventory across all formations

Training¶

The Army training year is built around five phases:

Conscript service is one year from enlistment. Following the active year, conscripts are enrolled in both the Army regular reserve and the LTDF reserve.
