Ethnic composition

Predominantly Thumbrian ethnically across the federal heartland and west, with regional variation by direction:

  • South — a mix of Thumbrian and Volnian populations, the latter descended from the constituent states that broke away from the Volnian Empire during its 19th-century western collapse.
  • North — small but established Gorlish minority communities along the Gorlish border, descended from cross-border migration and shared dynastic history.
  • East — small Vorseyjan minority communities, principally in the northern coastal towns where Hesperian fishing and shipping ties have long brought Vorseyjan families south.

Arcadia is regionally diverse but not globally diverse — almost the entire population traces ancestry to Sierran ethnic groups, with negligible immigration from Brassica, Caldoria, Magnolia, or Meridiana. The federation's civic identity is constitutional and territorial rather than ethnic.

The federation explicitly enshrines:

  • Federal citizenship with state-level membership
  • Equal rights and protections under federal law regardless of ethnicity, religion, or origin
  • Open citizen mobility between member states
  • Open citizen mobility between AEC member nations

Language

Thumbrian is the official federal language, used in government, the military, federal courts, and commerce. Thumbrian originated on Brassica (in what is now the Union of Thumbrian Soviet Republics) and was carried to Sierra by colonial-era settlers; modern Arcadian Thumbrian has diverged significantly from its Brassican parent in both vocabulary and pronunciation. Volnian is recognized as a regional language in the southern states.

The dominance of Thumbrian in international media, technology, and military operations reflects the federation's geopolitical reach across the Western Defense Pact.

Religion

The federation has no established faith. Predominantly secularized populations coexist with significant minority religious communities. The constitution guarantees free exercise of religion and prohibits the establishment of any state religion at the federal level.

Settlement patterns

  • Federal Heartland: highest population density; major industrial and metropolitan zones
  • Hesperian Seaboard: dense coastal cities; major port economies
  • Arcadian Mountains: sparsely populated; resource-extraction communities, military installations, alpine settlements
  • Northern Boreal: very sparse; resource-extraction and federal frontier communities
  • Southern Provinces: medium density; agriculture, maritime industry along the Aegiran coast, the Volnian-Arcadian cultural mix

Major metropolitan areas

The federal capital is Tarsus. Other major Arcadian cities are pending canonical naming.

Education

Public primary and secondary education is universal and state-administered. Higher education includes:

  • Major federal research universities
  • The Federation Military Academy (the federal officer-commissioning institution for the FS Army)
  • The Federation Naval Academy
  • The Federation Air Force Academy
  • The Federation Marine Corps officer-development pipeline

Health and demographics indicators

High life expectancy, advanced healthcare infrastructure, modern public-health institutions. The federation has world-leading biomedical and pharmaceutical industries.
