Imperial Volnian Army

Service chief: Commander-in-Chief, Imperial Volnian Army (reports to the Stavka) Headquarters: Imperial Army Headquarters, Chernagorsk Active strength: ~520,000 Doctrine: Western combined-arms; shock-infantry mechanized exploitation; massed artillery preparation

The Imperial Volnian Army (IVA) is the principal ground-warfare service of the Volnian Imperial Armed Forces. It is organized along Western brigade-based combined-arms lines — field armies, corps, divisions, brigade combat teams — but its regimental traditions, ceremonial culture, and unit names are drawn directly from the empire's Tsarist heritage: Imperial Guards, Cossack Hosts, Hussars, Lancers, Dragoons, Grenadiers, and the parade-ground rituals that go with them.

The doctrinal centerpiece of the modern Imperial Army is the Shock Grenadier Brigade Combat Team (SBCT) — heavy mechanized infantry built around the historical Grenadier tradition, supported by armored Lancer regiments and light Hussar reconnaissance.

Force structure

The Imperial Army is organized into three field armies with five corps and ten line divisions, plus the Imperial Guard Corps (which reports separately to the Stavka) and the regional Cossack Hosts.

The shock-mechanized doctrine

The Imperial Army's signature operational doctrine pairs:

  1. Shock infantry preparation — the Grenadier regiments mount the initial mechanized assault, fixing enemy formations through close-range mechanized combat
  2. Lancer exploitation — armored regiments break through and exploit on the operational depth
  3. Hussar reconnaissance — light cavalry / mounted reconnaissance screens the flanks and finds the next objective
  4. Massed artillery preparation — heavy fires through every phase

This doctrine was developed during the late Mid-Period of the Continental Wars and has been continuously updated since. It remains the empire's preferred approach to symmetric warfare against peer mechanized forces.

Doctrinal brigade templates

Shock Brigade Combat Team (SBCT) — ~4,800 personnel

  • 2 × Shock Grenadier Battalions (Pavlovsky-style mechanized infantry)
  • 1 × Armored Battalion (Imperial Lancer tradition, T-90V tanks)
  • 1 × Reconnaissance Squadron (Imperial Hussar tradition)
  • 1 × Field Artillery Battalion (self-propelled)
  • 1 × Brigade Sapper Battalion
  • 1 × Brigade Quartermaster Battalion

Mountain Brigade — ~4,300 personnel

  • 3 × Mountain Infantry Battalions (light, alpine-trained)
  • 1 × Reconnaissance Squadron (light)
  • 1 × Mountain Artillery Battalion (towed)
  • Sapper + Quartermaster battalions

Light Brigade (COIN) — ~4,200 personnel

  • 3 × Light Infantry Battalions
  • 1 × Cossack Reconnaissance Regiment (host-affiliated)
  • 1 × Light Artillery Battalion
  • Sapper + Quartermaster battalions

The 1st Shock Division 'Borodino' is the empire's premier line shock-mechanized division and the doctrinal template for the wider army. Built around three Shock Brigade Combat Teams plus division-level artillery, reconnaissance, and aviation, it is the formation against which every other Volnian division is measured.

The division is named for the Battle of Borodino — a Continental Wars engagement still studied in Volnian war colleges as the model shock-mechanized action.
