Government & Politics

The Federated States of Arcadia is a federal constitutional republic. Sovereignty is shared between the federal government, seated at Tarsus, and the constituent member states of the federation. The federal government's powers are enumerated in the constitution; powers not enumerated remain with the states or the people.

Federal structure

Legislative branch — Congress of the Federated States

A bicameral legislature:

Chamber Composition Term Primary role
Senate Equal representation per member state 6 years (staggered) Advice and consent on treaties, federal appointments; ratification of constitutional amendments
House of Representatives Apportioned by population 2 years Origination of revenue and appropriations legislation

The Congress holds:

  • Power of the purse
  • War declaration authority (formally exercised against DPR Rakutania and CSAT in 2026)
  • Treaty ratification (2/3 Senate)
  • Confirmation of federal officers and judges

Executive branch — Office of the President

The President of the Federated States is both head of state and head of government, separately elected from the legislature for a fixed term. The presidency commands:

  • The Federated States Armed Forces (commander-in-chief)
  • The executive departments (Defense, State, Treasury, etc.)
  • Veto authority over legislation (overridable by 2/3 of both chambers)

Judicial branch — Federated States Supreme Court

The Supreme Court is the highest court of the federal judiciary. Justices are nominated by the President and confirmed by the Senate, serving lifetime appointments to preserve independence.

Political culture

  • Two-party-dominant system with periodic third-party movements
  • Strong civilian control of the military, consistently enforced since founding
  • Robust civil-society institutions (press, academia, civic organizations)
