Federal Amphibious Rapid Brigade

The Federal Amphibious Rapid Brigade (FARB)Suijō Sokuō Ryōdan — is the Federation's amphibious and littoral combat force. 15,000 active personnel + 5,000 trained reservists. Organised under FMDF operational command but with its own service identity, traditions, and Brigade command, the FARB combines a modern MAGTF (Marine Air-Ground Task Force) organization with the Federation's unusually strong vertical-envelopment kit — MV-22 Osprey tiltrotor and F-35B STOVL fighter.

Headquartered at FARB Headquarters in the FMDF Akehoshi compound, the FARB is operationally subordinated to the Senshi Fleet for embarkation, sustainment, and command coordination, but its tactical doctrine, training, and equipment programs are managed by the Brigade headquarters.

Doctrine

The FARB is a combined-arms expeditionary force. Principal missions:

  1. Counter-amphibious defence of the home archipelago — the principal mission given Federation strategic posture
  2. Amphibious assault — forcible entry from sea via the Senshi Fleet's Amphibious Flotilla, subject to constitutional revision
  3. Littoral combat — coastal raid, port seizure, island operations
  4. MAGTF deployment — 1st Amphibious Rapid Regiment continuously forward-deployed at Senshi-port; 2nd + 3rd Regiments held as ready forces
  5. Crisis response and noncombatant evacuation — the Federation's go-to overseas evacuation force

The FARB embraces vertical envelopment via MV-22 Osprey + F-35B STOVL as its tactical-mobility multiplier, distinguishing it doctrinally from heavier amphibious-assault models. The combination of MV-22 lift, F-35B fire support, and AAV-7 wet-shore lift is the FARB's signature operational shape.

Force structure

Formation Type Composition
1st Amphibious Rapid Regiment Marine regiment (forward-deployed) 3 marine infantry battalions + 1 AAV battalion + 1 artillery battalion. ~5,000 personnel. Forward-deployed at Senshi-port.
2nd Amphibious Rapid Regiment Marine regiment (ready force) Same TO&E as 1 ARR. At Akehoshi.
3rd Amphibious Rapid Regiment Marine regiment (tropical / southern) Same TO&E. At Nansei City.
Amphibious Aviation Battalion Marine aviation F-35B (embarked) + MV-22 + AH-1Z + UH-1Y
Amphibious Combat Logistics Battalion Logistics Combat Logistics Battalion + supporting maintenance

Distinctive equipment

The FARB operates several equipment classes distinct from the broader HFDF:

  • Marines-variant Leopard-equivalent — FARB Tank Battalion (when constitutional revision permits expanded armoured-Marine force; presently a TBD capability)
  • AAV-7 / ACV replacement — the AAV Battalions. Tracked armour on land; swimmer in surf
  • Boxer Marines (LAR variant) — wheeled light-armour reconnaissance
  • F-35B Lightning II (STOVL) — FARB Fighter Wing embarked aboard the Hinomori-class carriers; the only STOVL fighter in service in OFBN coalition operations
  • MV-22 Osprey — Marinekipprotorgeschwader equivalent. Strategic tactical mobility; lifts a Marine company by tiltrotor
  • AH-1Z Viper / UH-1Y Venom — attack helicopter + utility helicopter pair
  • NH-90 TTH (Marine variant) — Marinesturmhubschrauberbataillon equivalent

Common with the FGDF: Howa Type-30 service rifle, Patria-equivalent IFV (1st ARR heavy element), M777 (Marine artillery battalions), Sumitomo Type-74 GPMG, body armor NIJ Level IV.

Amphibious Rapid Regiment composition

Each Amphibious Rapid Regiment is a self-contained MAGTF that can be embarked aboard one Akagi-class LHD + 1 Ōsumi-class LPD. The standard MAGTF tri-element model:

Ground Combat Element (GCE)

  • 3 marine infantry battalions (~800 personnel each)
  • 1 marine artillery battalion (M777 155mm — air-mobile)
  • Recon, ATGM, mortar attachments

Air Combat Element (ACE)

  • 1 F-35B STOVL squadron (~14 aircraft, embarked)
  • 1 MV-22 Osprey squadron
  • 1 AH-1Z attack helicopter squadron
  • 1 UH-1Y utility helicopter squadron

Logistics Combat Element (LCE)

  • 1 Marine combat logistics battalion (CLB)

Marine Special Operations

The FARB operates a Marine Special Operations Detachment under JSOC command (the same arrangement as TSST and Coast Guard SST). The detachment is ~200 operators, specializing in:

  • Direct action against littoral targets
  • Maritime interdiction (boarding, ship seizure) — overlaps with TSST mission set
  • Special reconnaissance from sea
  • Coalition SOF integration with FSA Marine SOF + Choktovakian Marine equivalent

The Detachment operates closely with the TSST given overlapping mission sets and command channel.

Continuation War status (Turn 0)

  • 1st Amphibious Rapid Regiment continues forward-deployed at Senshi-port; routine cycle; not engaged in Continuation War operations
  • 2nd ARR + 3rd ARR at home; ready-force posture; no contingency activations
  • Marine SOF has conducted limited joint exercises with FSA Marine SOF under WDP-associate arrangements

The FARB has not been activated for Continuation War operations under the Federation's neutrality posture. Constitutional revision would permit expanded participation; the structural debate continues.
