Aegiran Navy (Stolos)

The Aegiran Navy — the Stolos — is the republic's senior service and the principal combat arm of the Aegiran Federal Defense Forces. Approximately 110,000 active personnel including the Naval Air Arm, the supporting shore establishment, and the substantial Naval Reserve cadre.

The Stolos is the largest blue-water peer navy in central Sierra and the principal WDP naval force in the Aegiran Sea theater. Its modern lineage traces directly from the pre-classical Aegiran maritime tradition; the institutional continuity of the service extends across 1,600 years of recorded history, with no significant interruption.

Doctrine

The Stolos is a blue-water sea-control navy built around three core missions:

  1. Aegiran Sea sea control — denying hostile naval forces operational freedom; protecting Aegiran and WDP shipping; constraining CSAT resupply of the occupied eastern islands
  2. Power projection from the sea — providing amphibious lift, naval gunfire, and air support for Marine and coalition land operations, particularly the planned eastern islands recapture
  3. Coalition operations — integrating with WDP and MTF partners across the broader Sierran maritime theater

The Stolos is doctrinally focused on surface combatants and attack submarines at the high end, with substantial amphibious lift and supporting elements. The republic does not operate fleet aircraft carriers; coalition fleet aviation is provided by FSA carriers in WDP framework operations.

Force structure

The Stolos is organized into:

  • The Aegean Fleet — the principal combat force, comprising surface combatants, submarines, and supporting elements. Headquartered at Krygos
  • The Pharosian Squadron — the western fleet element, based at Pharos, responsible for western Aegiran Sea and the southern oil-shipping routes
  • The Naval Air Arm — maritime patrol, anti-submarine warfare, fleet helicopters, and a small ground-attack capability
  • The Amphibious Group — landing ships, beach-assault capabilities, and the embarked Marine support shipping
  • Coastal Defense Command — integrated coastal artillery, harbor defense, and the republic's substantial naval mine capability
  • The Naval Shore Establishment — bases, shipyards, training, supply, and administrative functions

Principal vessels

[TBD — Barry to specify class designations and quantities. Conventional placeholder structure follows.]

Surface combatants

Class Type Role Quantity
TBD Destroyer (DDG) Anti-air, anti-surface, ASW ~18
TBD Frigate (FFG) Anti-submarine, general purpose ~24
TBD Corvette Coastal patrol, near-water defense ~22
TBD Fast attack craft (missile) Inter-island patrol, anti-surface ~30

Submarines

Class Type Role Quantity
TBD SSK (diesel-electric attack, AIP) Sea-lane interdiction, ISR ~14

The Stolos does not operate nuclear-powered submarines (compliant with the Outer Space Demilitarization Protocols' related provisions).

Amphibious

Class Type Role Quantity
TBD LHD (Landing Helicopter Dock) Marine assault, helicopter ops ~3
TBD LPD (Landing Platform Dock) Marine landing, well-deck ops ~6
TBD LST (Landing Ship Tank) Vehicle landing, beach assault ~8
TBD LCAC / LCU Landing craft numerous

The Stolos amphibious capability is proportionally larger than typical peer navies of comparable total size, reflecting the strategic centrality of the eastern islands recapture mission.

Auxiliaries

Fleet oilers, replenishment ships, hospital ships, salvage and recovery vessels, and the other support vessels common to a peer-tier navy. Quantities and specifications TBD.

Bases

Base Island Role
Krygos Naval Base Krygos Principal fleet headquarters and base; the largest naval base in central Sierra
Heliopolis Naval Base Heliopolis Secondary fleet base; Naval Air Arm primary station; major shipyard
Pharos Naval Base Pharos Pharosian Squadron homeport; western maritime operations
Karthago Naval Station Karthago Coastal patrol; submarine support; agricultural-island logistics support
Federal Naval Academy Krygos Officer training; staff college

The pre-war base at Mytilene is currently under CSAT occupation; its facilities have been seized intact and are reportedly in CSAT operational use.

The Naval Air Arm operates:

  • Maritime patrol aircraft (MPA) — long-range surveillance, anti-submarine warfare
  • Anti-submarine helicopters — embarked on destroyers and frigates
  • Naval fighter and strike aircraft — limited fixed-wing combat capability, principally ship-defense
  • Search-and-rescue rotary-wing — distributed across coastal stations

The Naval Air Arm is small but capable. It does not include carrier-based aviation in the FSA Navy sense.

Coastal Defense Command

A significant proportion of Stolos personnel and equipment is in Coastal Defense Command, the integrated coastal artillery and harbor defense organization. CDC operates:

  • Coastal artillery batteries — heavy artillery covering the major harbor approaches; some modern (missile-based), some legacy (gun-based but still operationally useful)
  • Naval mine warfare — substantial defensive mine inventory and the dedicated minelaying capability to deploy it on warning
  • Harbor defense — fixed harbor surveillance, anti-swimmer measures, port security
  • The Coastal Surveillance Network — radar and electro-optical surveillance covering the approaches to every federal-controlled harbor

The CDC's capabilities are a deterrent to a CSAT-style amphibious assault on the remaining four federal islands; the 2026 fall of the eastern islands has substantially increased CDC investment and operational tempo.

OFBN-WDP Joint Maritime Command

The WDP Joint Maritime Command (JMC) at Krygos coordinates allied naval operations across the central Sierran theater. JMC is staffed by personnel from all WDP navies, with the senior Aegiran admiral as the standing chair (a position reflecting the Stolos's senior role in the theater).

JMC functions:

  • Coalition operational planning for the Aegiran Sea and adjacent waters
  • Coordinated maritime patrol — integrated WDP naval coverage of the theater
  • Intelligence sharing — particularly on CSAT and DPRR naval movements
  • Logistics coordination — sharing of basing rights, supply chains, repair facilities

Current operations (Continuation War)

The Stolos is in full wartime posture. Principal current operations:

  • Aegiran Sea sea control patrols (continuous)
  • Anti-submarine operations against CSAT and DPRR-aligned submarine activity
  • Surface combatant operations to interdict CSAT supply to the occupied eastern islands
  • Coalition convoy escort for WDP and MTF shipping through the southern oil routes
  • Amphibious group exercises in preparation for the planned eastern islands recapture
  • Coastal defense of the four federal islands' approaches

The naval war has been steadily favorable for the Stolos and WDP since the initial August 2026 setback. CSAT naval forces have been progressively constrained to a defensive posture around the occupied eastern islands; CSAT amphibious offensive capability has been substantially attrited. The eastern islands recapture is not yet ready operationally, but the precursor naval campaign is being won.

Notes on the loss of the eastern islands

The Aegiran Navy was not the primary failure point in the 2026 loss of the eastern islands. The CSAT operation succeeded through a combination of operational surprise, mass amphibious tonnage, and the Aegiran Navy's commitment to defending against an expected attack vector that proved not to be where the CSAT struck. Subsequent analysis identifies failures of intelligence and operational deployment rather than failures of fleet capability.

The Stolos's institutional response has been characteristically professional and unsentimental: lessons identified, corrective action taken, doctrine and posture updated. The senior Stolos leadership has not been politically scapegoated; the conduct of the early August 2026 naval operations is broadly considered to have been as good as could have been managed given the intelligence picture and force disposition. The recapture campaign will provide the test of whether the Stolos has learned the right lessons.
