Foreign Relations

Gorlish foreign policy is defined by a single strategic fact: the country lies on the principal land corridor between western and eastern Sierra, and has been invaded across that corridor in every major continental war since the founding. Every other element of the foreign-policy posture follows from this: the indispensable Arcadian alliance, the integration into the Western Defense Pact, the wary partnership with Volnia, the existential rivalry with the eastern bloc.

Allies and partners

Western Defense Pact (WDP)

Gorlund is a founding member of the WDP (1973) and was the principal continental partner to the FSA throughout the alliance's first fifty years. WDP membership is, in Gorlish strategic thinking, the precondition of national survival.

  • Federated States of Arcadia

The indispensable strategic partner. Arcadia supplies the bulk of the WDP's airpower, naval power, advanced technology, and economic depth; the Halmstrand Strait corridor between the two countries is the central logistic artery of Gorlish national life. The Arcadian Expeditionary Corps deployed in support of the GDF in late summer 2026 is the largest peacetime-to-wartime Arcadian land deployment since the Continental Wars.

  • The Volnian Empire

The newest WDP partner. The Volnian-Gorlish relationship has been complicated by centuries of east-versus-west rivalry, but the 2026 Volnian accession transformed Volnia overnight into Gorlund's largest land-force coalition partner. The Volnian Imperial forces deployed against DPRR rear areas have been militarily decisive in stabilizing the eastern front.

  • Republic of Aegira

Maritime ally controlling the Aegiran Strait — a secondary but important route into the Sur'Bari Sea for WDP naval forces. Gorlish-Aegiran cooperation is historically deep, particularly in naval intelligence and submarine warfare.

  • Leipzisch Kaiserreich

Bilateral treaty partner outside the WDP framework, providing strategic depth into Brassica and a major source of high-end manufactured imports.

Informal partners

  • Eurekan Commonwealth

A natural commercial and cultural partner, especially in shipping and finance.

  • Maritime Trade Federation (MTF)

Observer member; Gorlish flagged shipping participates actively in MTF lane-protection consultations.

  • Kingdom of Choktovakia

Cordial but distant. The two countries share an aversion to the eastern bloc but Choktovakia's leadership of SNAM precludes formal alignment.

Rivals

The Eastern Strategic Alliance (ESA)

  • Democratic People's Republic of Rakutania (DPRR)

The principal external threat to the Republic. DPRR forces invaded eastern Gorlund on 24 July 2026, opening the Continuation War. The Östmark frontier is the active land theater. DPRR doctrine, equipment, and command culture are all studied closely by Gorlish defense intellectuals as the "known adversary" of the modern era.

  • Confederated States of Ardun Territories (CSAT)

The DPRR's southern partner. CSAT is not engaged in direct land combat against Gorlund — that war is fought against Volnia — but CSAT naval forces threaten the northern Boreal Sea coast and CSAT air assets have launched stand-off attacks against Gorlish targets.

The Peoples International

The UTSR + PRK socialist bloc holds no direct hostility toward Gorlund, but is a structural competitor of the WDP and has provided diplomatic cover to DPRR positions at the International Court since the invasion.

Multilateral institutions

Institution Gorlish role
International Court (Chartania) Charter member; major funder; the country was a co-signatory of the Treaty of Chartania (1972)
Outer Space Demilitarization Protocols Signatory
Maritime Trade Federation (MTF) Observer; lane-protection participant
WDP Founding member (1973)
WDP Joint Force Command Permanent national contingent; GDF Joint Liaison Mission at JFC headquarters

Current armed conflicts

The Continuation War (2026– )

  • Belligerents against Gorlund: DPR Rakutania (direct invasion), CSAT (air-naval support)
  • Gorlish role: Primary belligerent and casus belli; the war opened with the DPRR invasion of eastern Gorlund
  • Coalition partners: FSA (expeditionary land forces, air, naval), Volnian Empire (eastern front pressure)
  • Theaters: Östmark (active land front), Boreal Sea (active naval front), Halmstrand Strait (active naval defense), southern airspace (active air defense)
  • Status: Active. The front has stabilized roughly along the Jernå line; Östmark province is partially occupied; the WDP coalition is pursuing a counter-offensive build-up through winter 2026 into spring 2027

The Volnian Civil War is also a relevant active conflict, but Gorlund is not a belligerent — the country has been fully occupied with its own war on the Östmark front since July 2026.

Foreign-policy doctrine

The core principles of modern Gorlish foreign policy:

  1. Sovereignty through alliance — the country's independence is preserved not by isolation but by membership in the WDP
  2. The grain corridor is the lifeline — protection of the Halmstrand Strait and the WDP supply chains is the central operational concern
  3. Containment of the eastern bloc — deterrence in peace, defense in depth in war
  4. Strategic patience toward Choktovakia — the SNAM-led non-aligned bloc is not a threat but is not an ally
  5. Constitutional patriotism abroad — Gorlish diplomacy promotes the values of the founding compact: republican government, constitutional law, dual-ethnic accommodation
