Geography

The Federation occupies an archipelago of four principal islands plus several hundred smaller ones, forming a curving 2,800-km chain in the open ocean east of the Sierran continent and north of the Xianren mainland. To the west across the Hinomuran Sea lies the Kingdom of Choktovakia (Hinomura's closest WDP neighbour); further west across the Sea of Pelwan lies the bulk of the Sierran continent (Volnia, FSA Arcadia, the Aegiran archipelago, the Leipzisch Kaiserreich, etc.). To the south across the Sea of Xianren lies the Xianren Federation — the Federation's principal adversary. The archipelago is volcanically active, mountainous, and structurally seismic; it is also the most economically developed maritime geography in Europa.

The principal islands

Hokutō (Northern Island)

The largest of the four by area. Subarctic and temperate; cold, mountainous, lightly populated outside of the southern coastal belt. Hokutō City (~2.3 million) is the regional capital and the principal industrial centre of the Federation's heavy-industry sector. The Hokutō Naval Station is the FMDF's principal Boreal-Ocean-facing operating base. The Hokutō population (Hokutōjin sub-identity) maintains a distinct dialect substantially divergent from Akehoshi-standard Hinomuran — it is routinely subtitled on national broadcasts.

Akehoshi (Central Island)

The most populous and politically dominant island. Temperate climate; densely populated central plain (the Akehoshi Basin); the capital city Akehoshi (metropolitan population ~32 million) sits on the eastern coast facing the open ocean. The Hinomuran Spine volcanic range runs north-south through the centre of the island; the active volcano Mt. Senjō at ~3,200 m is the Federation's principal symbolic landmark.

Saikoku (Western Island)

The Sierra-facing island. Mountainous interior; mercantile port cities along the western coast (Senshi-port ~4.5 million, Yamamori ~1.8 million inland). Saikoku is the Federation's principal trade gateway to Sierra and historically the most cosmopolitan region. The Saikoku-jin sub-identity has long-standing minority Xian-speaking communities in the southwestern ports.

Nansei (Southern Island)

Subtropical to tropical. Sparsely populated; principal agriculture (rice, sugar cane, citrus) and tourism. Nansei City (~900,000) is the regional capital. The Nansei Air Base is operationally critical for southern archipelago coverage and is the FADF's principal forward base for the Open Sea Lanes southern patrol cycle — Nansei is the closest island to Xianren and is the front line of the counter-Xianren posture.

Key terrain features

The Hinomuran Spine

Volcanic mountain range running the length of Akehoshi and continuing as a chain through the Hokutō southern peninsula and the Saikoku interior. Peaks reach ~3,200 m at Mt. Senjō; the chain includes approximately 70 active volcanoes archipelago-wide, with regular small eruptions in the southern Nansei sector. The Spine bisects Akehoshi politically as well as physically: capital-region politics dominate the eastern coast; the western coast is more agrarian and more politically Reformist.

The Hinomuran Sea

The body of water immediately west of Hinomura, separating the Federation from the Kingdom of Choktovakia. ~1,400 km wide. Hinomura's principal commercial shipping channel — the bulk of Saikoku's trade flows through it. Patrolled jointly by FMDF surface forces and the Choktovakian Royal Navy under the 1991 Hinomuran-Choktovakian Sea Lanes accord.

The Sea of Xianren

The body of water immediately south of Hinomura, separating Nansei and the southern archipelago from the Xianren mainland. ~1,200 km wide at its narrowest. The Sea of Xianren is the primary strategic theatre of the Federation: Xianren coastal-missile and air forces are positioned along the northern Xianren seaboard explicitly to range it; the Nansei + Southern Archipelago coastal-battery belt, the FMDF submarine force, and the Goeitai-4 surface group are the explicit counter-deployment.

The Sea of Pelwan

The wide ocean basin further west beyond Choktovakia, separating the Hinomuran-Choktovakian sphere from the main Sierran continent (Arcadia, Aegira, Volnia, the Leipzisch Kaiserreich). The principal long-range commercial route to mainland Sierra transits the Sea of Pelwan; jointly patrolled by FMDF detachments and Arcadian 7th Fleet under the Open Sea Lanes agreement of 1985.

The Southern Archipelago

The chain of tropical and subtropical islands extending south from Nansei toward the Sea of Xianren. Lightly populated but strategically important: forward radar coverage of the Xianren northern seaboard and the Aegiran-Senshi Channel originates here.

The Boreal Ocean

The cold body of water north of Hokutō. Ice-affected in the deep winter, lightly trafficked commercially. The FMDF Northern Surface Group operates from Hokutō Naval Station and the Federation maintains one icebreaker (HMS Shirase) primarily for research and resupply of the northernmost outposts.

The Senshi-Aegiran Channel

The southwestern channel between Hinomura's southern archipelago and the Aegiran archipelago. Strategically important as the principal route between Hinomuran waters and the wider Aegiran Sea theatre; jointly patrolled with Aegira under the 1987 bilateral pact.

The Endorin Ocean

The open ocean east of Hinomura. Relatively unpatrolled; sparse commercial traffic. The eastern Akehoshi coast (and the Akehoshi Eastern Cape Battery line) provides defensive coverage of the Endorin Ocean approach.

Climate

The Federation spans approximately 15° of latitude and shows correspondingly varied climate:

  • Hokutō: subarctic to temperate; heavy snow December–March; cool summers
  • Akehoshi (central): temperate; four distinct seasons; humid summers
  • Saikoku: temperate to subtropical; mild winters; humid summers
  • Nansei: subtropical to tropical; mild winters; hot humid summers
  • Southern archipelago: tropical; minimal seasonal variation

Monsoon influence in the summer brings heavy rainfall to the southern and western islands. Typhoons are common in August–October across all islands; significant typhoons cause yearly economic disruption.

Earthquakes are frequent across the archipelago. The Federation maintains the most advanced seismic warning system in Europa; significant earthquakes (magnitude 6+) occur multiple times per year.

Bordering nations (maritime)

The Federation has no land borders. Maritime neighbours:

Direction Nation Status Crossing
South Xianren Federation Adversary Sea of Xianren (~1,200 km at narrowest)
West Kingdom of Choktovakia Ally (closest WDP neighbour) Hinomuran Sea (~1,400 km)
Distant west (beyond Choktovakia) FSA Arcadia, Republic of Aegira, Volnia, LKR Allies / partners Sea of Pelwan + Sierran continental access
Southwest Republic of Aegira (southern reach) Ally Senshi-Aegiran Channel
North (open ocean) Boreal Ocean
East (open ocean) Endorin Ocean

Geographic strategic implications

The Federation's geography determines its defence doctrine:

  • No land borders → no army-centric continental defence posture; the army exists to defend the home archipelago against amphibious threat
  • All imports cross the Hinomuran Sea (west) or the Sea of Pelwan (far west) → maritime defence is existential, not auxiliary
  • Geographic depth via the archipelago → defence-in-depth doctrine; defensive belts on each island; no single decisive front
  • Volcanic + seismic hazards → the military maintains substantial disaster-response capability; the Prefectural Civil Defence Companies are a serious operational force, not a ceremonial one
  • Southern sea lanes pass directly under Xianren coastal-missile coverage → the Nansei + Southern Archipelago Type-12 SSM belt, the Kairyū-class submarine fleet at Senshi Submarine Base, and the FADF strike posture at Nansei Air Base are the explicit Xianren counters
