The Republic of Gorlund is the senior continental land power of north-central Sierra and the founding continental member of the Western Defense Pact. A parliamentary republic established in 1672, modern Gorlund stretches from the temperate grain plains of the Halmsletta in the south through the great evergreen forests of the central belt to the Jotunfjell alpine range and the Vorseyjan arctic tundra in the far north.
Gorlund's history is the history of being on the road between west and east. The country has been an invasion corridor for every major continental war since the founding — three times in the Continental Wars cycle (1890–1972), and again in the present Continuation War (2026– ), which opened with the DPR Rakutanian armoured thrust across the Östmark frontier. This experience has produced both the institution and the personality of the modern Gorlish state: the world's most fully-developed Total Defense system — a small professional active force backed by a near-million-strong territorial reserve — and a national culture of quiet, organized, almost stoic civic endurance.
Sovereignty and government¶
Gorlund is a unitary parliamentary republic. The unicameral Riksdag elects the Prime Minister (the Statsminister), who heads the cabinet and is the practical chief executive. The President of the Republic is the popularly-elected ceremonial head of state, with constitutional reserve powers in matters of war declaration, emergency rule, and the dissolution of the Riksdag.
Civilian control of the military is constitutionally absolute. The Prime Minister, through the Minister of Defense, exercises political direction of the Gorlish Defense Forces; the Supreme Commander (the Överbefälhavare) is the senior uniformed officer and commands operationally.
Strategic posture¶
Gorlund's strategic priorities, in rough order:
- Hold the Östmark frontier — the DPRR invasion of 2026 is the existential threat of the present era
- Maintain WDP coalition cohesion — the alliance is the indispensable strategic enabler of national survival
- Preserve the grain corridor through Arcadia — Gorlund cannot feed itself in war without secure imports
- Defend in depth via the Total Defense system — every Gorlish citizen of military age is a planned reservist
- Sustain the dual-language, dual-region civic identity — the Vorseyjan north and Gorlish south are bound by shared institutions, not shared ethnicity
